We are delighted to share that a joint research paper by Xu Chen, a former visiting PhD student at NExT, Dr. Wang Wenjie, a research fellow from NExT, Prof. Pang Liang a former visiting scholar at NExT, and Prof. Chua Tat-Seng has received the Best Paper Honorable Mention at the 47th International ACM SIGIR Conference on Research and Development in Information Retrieval (SIGIR) 2024. The conference was held in Washington D.C., from 14 to 18 July 2024.

In their paper titled "A Taxation Perspective for Fair Re-ranking", the authors tackled the critical challenge of fairness in ranking systems, proposing a novel approach inspired by taxation principles. This method aims to mitigate bias in re-ranking while maintaining efficiency and effectiveness. The collaborative effort represents a significant stride toward fairer recommendation systems.
Chen Xu is a fourth-year PhD candidate at Renmin University of China (RUC) and was previously a visiting PhD student at NExT. His research interest lies in fairness in recommender systems. Dr. Wang Wenjie, who earned his PhD at NUS (supervised by Prof. Chua) in 2023, is now a research fellow at NExT Research Centre. Other collaborators on this paper include Xiaopeng Ye and Prof. Jun Xu from RUC, Prof. Liang Pang from the Institute of Computing Technology, and Prof. Tat-Seng Chua from our lab.
We are immensely proud of the recognition this paper has received and look forward to the continued success of our researchers and collaborators.
